Investing in employees' education and professional development is one way NBCUniversal is helping build a stronger, more skilled workforce. Through programs like its Education Assistance benefit, the company supports employees looking to expand their knowledge, develop new capabilities and take the next step in their careers.
For Giulianna Oblitas-Acosta, Senior Human Resources Manager at Telemundo Enterprises, that support helped her pursue a graduate degree while balancing a full-time career.
Giulianna shared her experience returning to school, how she balanced her professional and academic responsibilities, and the impact continuing her education has had on her career.
What inspired you to pursue a graduate degree while working full time?
GOA: After nearly 20 years of experience in Human Resources (HR) across multiple industries, I felt it was the right time to further strengthen my professional foundation and gain an additional edge for the next stage of my career. While my experience had provided me with a strong understanding of the HR field, pursuing a master's degree allowed me to formalize that knowledge, deepen my expertise, and challenge myself in new ways.
What did a typical week look like while balancing your role, classes, and personal commitments?
GOA: A typical week involved working during the day, then spending evenings reading, completing assignments, and working on projects. On average, I dedicated approximately 18 hours per week to studying, in addition to attending eight hours of classes every weekend. Before starting the program, I made a commitment to myself and communicated it to my family and friends: for one year, school would be my priority. Their interest in my development and genuine support made a meaningful difference.
How has your graduate program helped you grow in your current role?
GOA: The program deepened my understanding of HR and strengthened my confidence as a leader and decision-maker. While experience remains invaluable, having graduate-level education to reinforce and expand my knowledge has given me additional confidence. I have also become more creative and strategic in my approach to problem-solving. The program exposed me to new perspectives, research, and best practices.
What role did NBCUniversal's Education Assistance benefit play in your decision to return to school?
GOA: NBCUniversal's Education Assistance benefit played a significant role in making this goal achievable. Pursuing a graduate degree is a major financial commitment, and the tuition reimbursement benefit allowed me to focus more on learning and less on the financial burden associated with returning to school. I'm grateful to work for an organization that supports continuous learning and empowers employees to pursue opportunities that strengthen both their careers and their future contributions to the company.
