April is an annual opportunity for NBCUniversal employees to give back for International Volunteer Month. This year, more than 4,000 employees came together in-person and virtually to support over 100 of our nonprofit partners through projects facilitated by NBCUnites, the company’s social impact initiative, and events planned by employees with organizations of their choosing.
This year, nearly 500 employees participated in events through NBCUnites On Demand, which provides resources and suggestions on how to organize and complete projects as a team. Volunteers dedicated more than 9,900 hours of service to their communities in over 40 cities across the globe by mentoring students, beautifying outdoor spaces, and providing essential supplies to community members in need.
Check out some highlights below.

Uplifting our Communities
In Orlando volunteers got outside to participate in a day of fun, support, and encouragement with Special Olympics Florida (SOF), which provides year-round sports training and competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for people with intellectual disabilities. NBCUniversal has a strong relationship with SOF. NBC local affiliates have provided media support and coverage of SOF events and initiatives and NBC 6 and WESH2 have been recognized for their significant contributions to SOF’s mission of inclusion.
In Stamford volunteers dedicated their time to serving members across their community, from families to furry friends. With Inspirica, a local nonprofit striving to end homelessness and housing insecurity, employees packaged youth sports kits containing items such as NBC Sports water bottles, NBCU towels, protein bars, and more! Stamford volunteers didn’t forget the furry members of their community, visiting Lucky Dog Refuge to take the residents on much-appreciated walks.
Employees in New York sprang into service with BloomAgainBklyn, repurposing unsold flowers into beautiful arrangements for neighbors supported by YWCA Brooklyn, a women’s empowerment nonprofit. They also partnered with City Parks Foundation to help beautify Sara D. Roosevelt Park in Chinatown and joined forces with City Year NYC to stuff and dress teddy bears for local students.

Mentoring the Next Generation
Employees came together throughout Volunteer Month to mentor the next generation of storytellers and media leaders. Through a virtual national volunteer project with Urban Arts, volunteers researched scholarships valued collectively at over $850,000 to help students with the college application and scholarship process. They also gave back through a virtual event with Story Pirates Changemakers, where volunteers provided positive, personalized feedback on student authors’ stories, uplifting and celebrating young voices. Meanwhile, in New York and Boston, employees teamed up with Minds Matter, a college and career readiness nonprofit, to host high school students for an immersive multi-day case study on marketing the 2026 World Cup across local stations markets.
In Minneapolis, volunteers participated in a “play day” with students at Prodeo Academy, a charter school in Columbia Heights. In partnership with Playworks, volunteers engaged in games with the young students during recess meant to foster collaboration, teamwork, and conflict-resolution skills.
In Los Angeles, Fandango employees spent the afternoon with children from the Boys & Girls Club of Burbank & Greater East Valley. Volunteers engaged the children in games, made friendship bracelets, and packed kits with essentials to be donated to Boys & Girls Club staff members.

Los Angeles Wildfire Relief
Supporting LA communities affected by the wildfires remains a priority for NBCUnites. During Volunteer Month, we found ways to uplift those communities both locally and from afar.
Employees in Los Angeles kicked off Volunteer Month by helping to beautify Odyssey Charter School in Altadena, CA, a community tragically impacted by January's wildfires. In partnership with City Year LA, volunteers spent the afternoon painting beautiful murals around the school that will help brighten the hallways the students pass through each day. City Year is a national nonprofit that partners with schools to create learning environments where all students feel supported. To celebrate Earth Day volunteers continued their service, packaging urban gardening kits for students and first responder kits for the Los Angeles Fire Department Foundation.
In New York NBCUnites celebrated national Bring Your Kids to Work Day by providing an opportunity for employees to give back alongside their children. Volunteers packed kits of much needed essentials like shampoo, toothpaste, and razors for those affected by the wildfires with Happy Hope Foundation, a nonprofit dedicated to delivering a bit of happiness to children and families facing crises.
60 employees from across the country participated virtually in a “smoke & suds” event hosted in partnership with WeHero. During the event, volunteers learned about how wildfires happen, how they have increased, and what it takes to fight them. To thank the wildland firefighters who do this noble work, each participant created 6 bars of activated charcoal soap, decorating its wrapping paper with words of encouragement and appreciation. In total, 360 bars of soap were donated to the Wildland Firefighter Foundation and 90 volunteer hours were recorded.

NBCUnites Cares Day
Our colleagues around the globe got into the Volunteer Month spirit while celebrating their
annual “NBCUnites Cares Day.” Volunteers in Belfast partnered with Ravine NI, a local conservation project where young people with mental health challenges can gain work experience with specialists in horticulture and agriculture, to paint fences, pull weeds, and rejuvenate flower beds.
In London, employees teamed up with HandsOn London—an organization dedicated to
empowering individuals to create change through meaningful volunteer projects—to pack and design “giggle bags” filled with essentials for vulnerable populations.
Volunteers in Cape Town gave back to their local furry friends. In partnership with Oscars Arc WOOF Project, employees helped make a meaningful difference in the lives of shelter dogs.
Our colleagues in Seoul got their steps in for a good cause by walking and picking up litter along Cheonggyecheon, a stream and public space in downtown Seoul.
Cares Day was also celebrated with volunteer projects in the following cities: Amsterdam, Beijing, Bogota, Buenos Aires, Dublin, Frankfurt, Hamburg, Hong Kong, Johannesburg, Melbourne, Mexico City, Milan, Munich, Paris, Rio de Janeiro, Rome, Sao Paulo, Shanghai, Singapore, Sydney, Toronto, Vienna, Zurich.
