From live sports that bring millions of viewers together to entertainment franchises that keep fans coming back, NBCUniversal’s strategy centers on connecting audiences with the content they love – and giving them more ways to experience it.

Speaking at Puck and MoffatNathanson's In the Arena conference on October 1, NBCUniversal Media Group Chairman Matt Strauss outlined how the company's unique flywheel of broadcast, streaming, sports and entertainment works together, and how Peacock is evolving to meet changing consumer habits.

Connecting Audiences to Premium Content Across Platforms

At the center of NBCUniversal's strategy is a focus on bringing the company’s incredible portfolio of premium programming to audiences wherever they choose to watch.

NBCUniversal draws on the combined reach of NBC, Peacock, Bravo, NBC Sports, NBC News and Telemundo to grow audiences across broadcast, streaming and pay TV.

Strauss pointed to NBC's broadcast reach as a distinct superpower, helping introduce viewers to Peacock while the streaming platform brings new audiences into NBCUniversal's broader portfolio.

Recent audience milestones illustrate the scale of that portfolio and the connections between its sports and entertainment programming:

  • 225 million Americans watched NBCUniversal's Legendary February programming, including Super Bowl LX, the Milan Cortina Winter Olympics and NBA All-Star Weekend.
  • 23.5 million average viewers watched the Milan Cortina Winter Olympics, up 96% from Beijing 2022.
  • 40% of Love Island USA viewers also watched the FIFA World Cup, demonstrating the crossover between NBCUniversal's sports and entertainment audiences.

The opportunity extends beyond any single hit or live event. Major sports moments introduce viewers to entertainment programming, while popular franchises give them reasons to return between games and seasons. That crossover helps turn an initial viewing occasion into an ongoing relationship.

For sports partners and advertisers, the combination of NBC’s reach and Peacock’s streaming capabilities offers more ways to connect with those audiences.

From Streaming Service to Entertainment Platform: Peacock's Next Chapter

Since launching in 2020, Peacock has followed a long-term strategy built around subscriber growth, engagement and profitability. The next phase builds on that foundation: reaching more consumers through strategic distribution partnerships and giving fans new ways to discover, watch and interact with their favorite content.

“We've made the decision years ago that the future is not ‘build a streaming platform’; it's ‘build an entertainment platform,’” Strauss said.

That evolution reflects a changing entertainment landscape in which streaming services compete not only with one another, but also with social media, gaming and other digital experiences for audiences' time.

Reaching consumers where they already spend time is central to NBCUniversal’s recently announced partnership with YouTube. The agreement includes plans to introduce a Peacock Premium and YouTube Premium bundle in 2027, extend NBCUniversal's distribution agreement with YouTube TV and explore additional international opportunities.

Alongside existing agreements with Apple and Walmart+, the partnership reflects Peacock’s focus on expanding its reach while pursuing incremental growth and profitability.

He highlighted a mix of current innovations and future possibilities:

  • AI-powered vertical video: Technology that tracks live NBA action to create real-time vertical viewing experiences for mobile audiences.
  • Your Bravoverse: An AI-powered feature that uses thousands of hours of Bravo programming to create personalized playlists based on fans' favorite shows and personalities.
  • Contextual advertising: Using AI to better understand what's happening within programming and deliver more relevant advertising experiences.

Together, these applications point toward a Peacock experience shaped more closely around individual fans: what they love, how they discover it, and how they choose to watch.

An Established Strategy, Moving Faster

As NBCUniversal prepares for its planned separation, Strauss emphasized continuity in the company’s strategy, and the opportunity to execute it faster.

“Spinning off isn’t about changing our strategy. I would say it’s really about speed,” Strauss said. “This is about just moving even faster.”

That includes continuing to invest in live sports, expanding distribution partnerships, and taking a disciplined approach to where content and technology can deliver the greatest value.

Internationally, that discipline means evaluating the right combination of streaming, licensing, and partnerships for each market, building on assets including Universal+, Hayu, and shared streaming technology with Sky.

Across broadcast, streaming and international markets, the priorities remain consistent: use compelling content to reach audiences, connect them with more of the portfolio, and build lasting relationships through experiences that keep evolving.
