Following the NBA’s historic return to NBC last season, NBC Sports will open the 2026-27 NBA season on Oct. 20 with a first-ever NBA Tip-Off Tripleheader featuring Celtics at Pistons, 76ers at Knicks, and Thunder at Spurs on NBC and Peacock.
October 15, 2026
The NBA returns to NBC and Peacock for its second season with an unprecedented NBA Tip-Off tripleheader on Oct. 20. It will be the first time that a network has broadcast three NBA Tip-Off games as the Boston Celtics face the Detroit Pistons (3 p.m. ET), followed by the Philadelphia 76ers at NBA champion New York Knicks (7 p.m. ET), and finally Oklahoma City Thunder at the Spurs in San Antonio (9:30 p.m. ET). As the NBA season tips off, basketball coverage on NBC and Peacock joins NFL and college football, MLB baseball, Premier League soccer, and more as part of NBCUniversal’s year-round live sports calendar.
The NBC Sports production behind an NBA broadcasting first
NBC Sports will flex the full strength of its production operation for the NBA Tip-Off Tripleheader, bringing together top talent, multiple New York broadcast facilities, and a complex logistics operation to deliver wall-to-wall coverage across NBC and Peacock. The day will showcase NBC Sports’ unmatched ability to bring fans closer to the game, with some of basketball’s biggest names live from Rockefeller Plaza and across its broadcast centers.
NBA Showtime host Maria Taylor will be joined by Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame analysts Carmelo Anthony, Vince Carter, and Tracy McGrady, with coverage originating from the TODAY Plaza and Studio 1A at 30 Rockefeller Plaza.
The day begins at 3 p.m. ET with the Boston Celtics at Detroit Pistons, featuring Jayson Tatum and Cade Cunningham. Following the game, the NBA Showtime team will head to Madison Square Garden for an extended pregame show ahead of the Philadelphia 76ers at New York Knicks matchup.
The team will then return to Studio 1A at Rockefeller Center for coverage of the night’s final game, as Victor Wembanyama and the San Antonio Spurs host Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and the Oklahoma City Thunder at 9:30 p.m. ET.
With live broadcasts spanning Rockefeller Plaza, Studio 1A, and Madison Square Garden, the tripleheader showcases the scale and coordination behind NBC Sports’ NBA coverage, bringing fans closer to the action throughout opening day.
NBA’s 2025-26 return to NBC set ratings milestones
The NBA’s return to NBC last fall set viewership milestones from the start, beginning with the debut NBA Tip-Off doubleheader. The season opener scored the largest tip-off audience since 2010. The opening night audience peaked at 7.1 million viewers and averaged 5.6 million across NBC and Peacock, based on Nielsen Big Data + Panel and digital data from Adobe Analytics.
Later in the season, NBC Sports’ first Sunday Night Basketball doubleheader on Feb. 1 kept up the ratings momentum, setting viewership records across platforms. The Knicks vs. Lakers leadoff game became the most-watched single game of the 2025-26 regular season, except for the opening night and Christmas Day games. It was also the most-watched Sunday night regular season NBA game since 2002, the last time NBC had NBA broadcast rights. Including the nightcap Thunder vs. Nuggets game, the Sunday Night Basketball debut doubleheader drew an overall average of 3.7 million viewers.
The ratings growth continued as the 2026 NBA All-Star, powered in part by a lead-in from NBC’s coverage of Olympic figure skating, pulled in a total of 46.5 million viewers across NBC platforms and ESPN. Averaging over 8.8 million viewers, it was the largest All-Star audience since 2011 and it more than tripled tune-in from the prior year. Ratings growth held strong throughout the 2025-26 regular season as NBA on NBC ratings averaged 2.8 million viewers overall, a 109% increase over comparable windows in the preceding year.
Advertising also performed strongly, with ad inventory for the NBA’s return season selling out ahead of last year’s regular-season tip-off.

More games, more sports, more ways to watch on NBC and Peacock
In July 2024, NBCUniversal and the NBA announced an 11-year agreement to present NBA and WNBA regular-season and playoff basketball games across numerous platforms beginning with the 2025-26 season. Expanding its NBA coverage is part of NBCUniversal’s strategy to keep sports fans engaged year-round, anchored by the tentpole Sunday Night franchise. Back-to-back seasons of Sunday Night Baseball, Sunday Night Football, and Sunday Night Basketball drive weekly tune-in throughout the year, offering sports fans the only year-round Sunday night appointment viewing in broadcast television. For the NBA specifically, tune-in is anchored by Monday on Peacock, Coast 2 Coast Tuesday on NBC and Peacock, and by Sunday Night Basketball itself.
NBCUniversal’s weekly live sports lineup is punctuated by signature events throughout the year like last February’s “Legendary February” coverage of the NBA All-Star, Super Bowl LX, and the 2026 Milan Cortina Winter Olympics, the summer’s 2026 FIFA World Cup, and the upcoming 2028 Los Angeles Summer Games.
NBC Sports has become a continuous home for fans throughout the year with more live sports than any other broadcast network. From the returns of the NBA and Major League Baseball to its No. 1 rated NFL coverage, Premier League Soccer, PGA Golf, horse racing, the Olympics, and more, NBC Sports is bringing fans closer to the biggest sports and moments across the calendar.
