Universal Pictures’ One Night Only brought its production to 41 locations across New York City, placing the city’s restaurants, cultural institutions and public spaces at the heart of the story. Over 39 days of filming, the production worked with more than 350 local businesses and vendors and employed more than 1,700 New York crew members and extras.
The film also created hands-on learning opportunities through the Universal Below-the-Line Traineeship, which connects aspiring production professionals with mentorship and experience on an active set.
New York at the Center of the Story
One Night Only filmed at 18 restaurants, cultural institutions and public spaces that capture the character of New York. Locations included The Original Ray’s Pizza on the Upper West Side, Chez Margaux in Chelsea, the White Horse Tavern and Electric Lady Studios in the West Village, The Foundry in Long Island City and Brooklyn Bridge Park.
Together, the locations gave the film an authentic backdrop and made New York an integral part of its story.
For production designer Scott Kuzio, the goal was to capture the city’s essence while creating the film’s distinct vision of it.
Supporting Local New York Businesses and Workers
Behind the scenes, One Night Only generated activity across the network of businesses and workers that make New York a leading production hub. The production relied on transportation and equipment providers, construction and catering companies, hospitality businesses and other local vendors, while also bringing activity directly to its filming locations.
In total, the production worked with more than 350 local businesses and vendors and employed more than 600 crew members and 1,100 extras sourced from New York.
Creating Pathways to Production Careers Across New York
Through the Universal Below-the-Line Traineeship, aspiring professionals gained hands-on experience and mentorship while working alongside experienced crew members on One Night Only.
Launched in 2021, the program has supported more than 180 trainees across 36 Universal films and more than 20 career paths, including production office, art, camera, electrical and costume.
On One Night Only, trainees worked in wardrobe, grip and sustainability through partnerships with IATSE Local 764, Bronx Community College and Brooklyn Workforce Innovations. The experience allowed them to build practical skills, explore different areas of filmmaking and contribute to a production rooted in New York communities.
Wardrobe trainee Tori Licata described the value of learning directly from experienced crew members:
