NBCUniversal earned 72 Emmy Award nominations Tuesday morning from the Television Academy, highlighted by key nods across the portfolio that included a record-breaking 31 for the “Saturday Night Live” franchise.
Universal Studio Group (USG) garnered 56 nominations, including 15 for the critically acclaimed “Hacks,” which earned noms for Outstanding Comedy Series and Jean Smart for Lead Actress in a Comedy Series.
Illustrating Peacock’s continued momentum, the streamer totaled 19 nominations, a massive increase from the nine it received a year ago. Leading the Peacock charge were six nominations for “SNL50: The Homecoming Concert,” including Variety Special (Live), and five nominations for the streamer’s reality hit “The Traitors,” including Reality Competition Program and Alan Cumming for host. Both “The Traitors” and Cumming won the Emmy last year.
Other Peacock shows to receive nominations include “Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy” for Television Movie, “SNL: Beyond Saturday Night” for Documentary or Nonfiction Series and “Poker Face” for Cynthia Erivo as Guest Actress in a Comedy Series.
“Saturday Night Live’s” milestone 50th season and special anniversary programming, including “SNL50: The Anniversary Special,” “SNL50: The Homecoming Concert,” “SNL50: Beyond Saturday Night” and “Ladies & Gentlemen… 50 Years of SNL Music,” received a total of 31 nominations.
“SNL50: The Anniversary Special” received 12 nominations, including Variety Special (Live) as well as for writing and directing. “Saturday Night Live” earned seven nominations, including Scripted Variety Series, Bowen Yang for Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series and for writing.
“Saturday Night Live” is the most Emmy-nominated and Emmy-winning show in television history. Creator and executive producer Lorne Michaels remains the most-nominated individual in Emmy history and now has 112 nominations after Tuesday’s tally.
In addition to “Saturday Night Live,” other NBC shows that were Emmy nominated include “Late Night with Seth Meyers,” which earned a nomination for its digital shortform series, “Corrections”; “The Voice,” which received five total nods; and “The Americas,” in which Tom Hanks received a nomination as narrator.
With its Reality Competition Program nod, “Top Chef” has now been nominated in that category every year since 2007. Kristen Kish continues to make her mark with Academy members by receiving her second nomination for Host for a Reality or Reality Competition Program for “Top Chef.”
The Primetime Emmy Awards will be held Sunday, Sept. 14 at the Peacock Theater at L.A. Live in downtown Los Angeles. The Creative Arts Emmy Awards are set for Sept. 6-7.
