NBC’s The Americas Marks Global Success and Historic 15-Year High for Nature Documentary Viewership on Linear Television

April 29, 2025
NBCUniversal is proud to celebrate the success of The Americas, a landmark natural history series that has captivated audiences across the globe. Originally greenlit by NBC in January 2020, the series remained a consistent priority, exemplifying the company's long-term commitment to delivering world-class programming.
Produced by BBC Studios' renowned Natural History Unit (Planet Earth, Prehistoric Planet) and Universal Television Alternative Studio, The Americas is narrated by Academy Award®-winner Tom Hanks with music by Hans Zimmer. The series, which has so far received a Gold Seal from the Environmental Media Association and a Critics Choice Real TV Awards nomination, concluded its season with a behind-the-scenes episode on April 20 and has achieved impressive viewership milestones.
Averaging 5.5 million viewers on NBC, including delayed viewing, The Americas holds two impressive titles as the most-watched nature documentary on linear television in over 15 years and the most-watched new alternative show of the 2024-25 season to date. Since its premiere on February 23, The Americas has reached over 60 million viewers worldwide, with more to come as it continues its international rollout across more than 35 platforms in over 180 territories. The series has generated strong international demand across major markets, including the UK, Australia, Spain, Latin America and more.
Looking ahead, NBCUniversal is also preparing to debut Surviving Earth, an ambitious CGI-driven series chronicling the history of planetary cataclysms and evolutionary survival. Currently in the final stages of post-production, Surviving Earth continues the company’s commitment to bold, genre-expanding programming.
