What’s been the most exciting project that you worked on during your internship assignment?
Decision 2024! The most exciting project I worked on was the 2024 NBC News Election Special. It took months and weeks to plan, build, rehearse, and produce the hours long special with live coverage all throughout election day into the night. As an intern, I was able to order graphics and fact check research for our planned segments, working closely with senior producers and anchors, like Tom Llamas. In the weeks before the big night, I was able to shadow our top anchors, like Lester Holt, Savannah Guthrie, Kristen Welker, and Hallie Jackson, as I stood in for other correspondents and guests during rehearsals. It all led up to the big night where I assisted the main control room for the network special while keeping an eye on when calls were made.

It takes a huge team of people to pull off what NBC News produces every day. During the Decision 2024 special, I was able to learn how several different teams all collaborate with each other on making decisions of all sizes. Every detail mattered for the operation to move smoothly, and because of that, I learned that it is not just beneficial to prepare for the one broadcast, but to run through practice scenarios and plan for whatever could happen depending on the many different outcomes.
What makes interning at NBCUniversal a unique opportunity and what skills are you walking away with as a result of this experience?
The workplace culture and being a part of recording history in the making are both main points to why I believe interning at NBCUniversal is such a unique opportunity. Through the support of my colleagues, intern supervisors, and mentors, I was able to produce segments for Top Story with Tom Llamas, be trained in and edit in AVID Media Composer, and even get to practice my anchor read in studio for an on-camera reel. I'm not walking away from NBCU but rather starting my next journey with way more skills and experience than I previously expected as a recent college graduate, being more prepared than ever for whatever future professional opportunities await.
What do you see as the benefits of interning throughout the course of an academic year?
Internal growth and team bonding! Not only is it professionally beneficial, but being able to intern throughout the course of an academic year led to a greater understanding of the workplace history, culture and team bonding. I was able to work better as a team if I got to know them more over one academic year instead of a rushed feeling in one semester as was previously.

Although summer internships are great, I feel like I've really had a longer timeline to dive deep into the work I did. Prior to this internship, all I knew was that I wanted to work in software development. Landing this internship, I knew that it wasn't a coding role, but I had no idea what to expect. Now having done the internship, I was introduced to an entire new world of technology functions that are crucial to the business. I worked in delivery where we made sure that a feature was on track to deliver on time through all the steps it comes across end-to-end. Although I know I still have a lot to learn in my career, the scope of my interests is closing in on the business functions in technology which I'm forever grateful to have discovered here at NBCU.
