Following the global success of Oppenheimer, Academy Award-winning filmmaker Christopher Nolan returns with his next feature, The Odyssey, a large-scale cinematic event that pushes the boundaries of theatrical storytelling.
A mythic action epic filmed across multiple international locations, The Odyssey is the first film shot entirely with IMAX cameras, a milestone Nolan has described as a “longest-held ambition.” The approach delivers an unprecedented level of scope and immersion, bringing scale to every frame, from intimate character moments to sweeping action sequences.
“It’s not a story—it’s the story,” Nolan said, describing the narrative’s enduring cultural impact across generations.
Newly released footage offers a first look at the film’s scope and character dynamics, including an exchange between Matt Damon’s Odysseus and Charlize Theron’s Calypso, alongside large-scale sequences depicting the Trojan Horse, one of the most iconic moments in the tale which is brought to life with thousands of soldiers and practical effects.
The film features an expansive ensemble cast including Zendaya, Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyong’o, Anne Hathaway, and Tom Holland, with Hathaway portraying Penelope and Holland as Telemachus.
Directed from Nolan’s original screenplay, the film is produced by Emma Thomas and Christopher Nolan under their Syncopy banner, with Thomas Hayslip serving as executive producer. The project builds on Nolan’s continued partnership with Universal following Oppenheimer, which earned 13 Academy Award nominations and seven wins, including Best Picture and Best Director.
The Odyssey opens in IMAX theaters worldwide on July 17, 2026.
