NBC BAY AREA WINS 2018 ALFRED I. DUPONT AWARD FOR INVESTIGATIVE SERIES “ARRESTED AT SCHOOL”

Press Release

December 07, 2017

SAN JOSE, CA – (December 7, 2017) – NBC Bay Area / KNTV is the recipient of the prestigious Alfred I. duPont-Columbia University Award for its investigative series, “Arrested at School.” KNTV’s nearly two-year long investigation revealed how schools across the country, including in the Bay Area, call police on minority students and children with disabilities at disproportionately higher rates than their peers, leaving young students with criminal records for what some describe as just childish misbehavior. The duPont-Columbia awards honor the best in broadcast, documentary, and online reporting. The awards recognize fewer than 20 stories each year from a pool of hundreds of entries. News outlets are selected based on the strength of their reporting and ability to produce stories that create an impact in the public interest.

“Our Investigative Unit devoted hundreds of hours in the past two years uncovering a disturbing trend occurring in our schools,” said Stephanie Adrouny, Vice President of News for NBC Bay Area. “Thanks to the dogged dedication of our investigative team, our ‘Arrested at School’ series led to major policy changes here at home and in schools nationwide.”

As a result of NBC Bay Area’s “Arrested at School” investigation, which was recognized with a George Foster Peabody award earlier in 2017, the San Jose Police Department and 34 Bay Area schools agreed to create formalized job descriptions for their campus officers. The recent policy change impacts roughly 67,000 students. Following the investigative series, the Obama Administration also released new guidelines concerning the use of campus-based police officers across the country’s more than 95,000 public schools. “We are honored to be recognized with this very important award and proud that our investigative unit helped to inspire security changes at schools in our own backyard and all across the country,” added Stacy Owen, President and General Manager for NBC Bay Area. “The sweeping changes that resulted from our investigation reinforces our station’s mission of shining a light on questionable practices and holding the powerful accountable to make the Bay Area a better place to live for all.”

The series of reports was led by investigative reporter Bigad Shaban, investigative producer Michael Bott, and photojournalists Mark Villarreal and Michael Horn. Rachel Witte, Jeremy Carroll, and Felipe Escamilla also contributed. Stephanie Adrouny and Bob Goldberger served as executive producers.

NBC Bay Area is home to the Bay Area’s region’s leading investigative station and largest investigative team. Since 2012, NBC Bay Area’s The Investigative Unit has been recognized with more than 55 awards for the station’s investigative work, including 15 national awards, five regional Edward R. Murrow Awards, and 24 regional Emmy Awards. To learn more about NBC Bay Area’s The Investigative Unit and its award-winning reports, click here.
