Christopher Nolan and Universal Pictures' ‘Oppenheimer’ Receives Five Golden Globes, Including Best Picture
Oppenheimer was a winner at the 81st annual Golden Globes, with the Christopher Nolan film taking home five wins including best picture (drama), best director, best actor, best supporting actor and best original score.

Oppenheimer — which became the highest-ever grossing biopic at over $950 million worldwide— stars Cillian Murphy as J. Robert Oppenheimer, the father of the atomic bomb. The film also stars Emily Blunt as Kitty Oppenheimer, Robert Downey Jr. as Lewis Strauss, Matt Damon as Leslie Groves, and Florence Pugh as Jean Tatlock. The film was part of historic cultural phenomenon and brought attention to the story J. Robert Oppenheimer through the film itself as well as numerous collaborative NBC News specials and more.
On the big screen, the film led to a resurgence in moviegoers not only in returning to theaters but in seeing it in premium large-formats, with many dedicated fans traveling hundreds of miles to view the full 70mm Imax presentation. Oppenheimer brought in $183 million in Imax, the fourth highest ever for an Imax film.
After finding critic and audience success with RottenTomatoes scores of 93% and 91% respectively, Oppenheimer auteur Christopher Nolan won his first Golden Globe for the three-hour World War II biopic, which was produced by his longtime collaborator and wife Emma Thomas. Thomas went on to thank Universal Pictures and Donna Langley for taking a risk on such an ambitious film.
In addition, both Cillian Murphy (Best Actor) and Robert Downey Jr. (Best Supporting Actor) walked away with acting accolades for their heated rivalry as theoretical physicist/father of the atomic bomb J. Robert Oppenheimer and Atomic Energy Commissioner Lewis Strauss, respectively. Ludwig Göransson won his first Golden Globe for the film's iconic score.
NBCUniversal also had Golden Globes victories with Focus Features' The Holdovers. The poignant holiday drama received two awards with Da'Vine Joy Randolph winning Best Supporting Actress in a Motion Picture, and Paul Giamatti winning for Best Actor in a Comedy or Musical Film.
