Since 2014, the units have answered 250,000 consumer complaints and recovered millions of dollars for viewers all across the county
NEW YORK, NY – (February 12, 2018) – Helping to fill a void in the marketplace by advocating for consumers who have nowhere else to turn and feel they have been wronged, NBC and Telemundo owned stations’ consumer investigative units - NBC Responds and Telemundo Responde - have recovered more than $20 million for consumers all across the U.S. and Puerto Rico. The consumer teams, with the support of the stations’ Consumer Investigative Center, have answered more than 250,000 consumer inquiries and helped individuals either receive funds they were owed or provided them with important information or referrals they needed to help them resolve their consumer issues.
“Our consumer teams answer every call and email they receive and see every consumer tip to the end,” said Valari Staab, President, NBCUniversal Owned Television Stations. “Thanks to our teams’ relentless work, thousands of consumers have recovered unpaid wages or funds they were owed. As many communities continue to recover from recent natural disasters, our consumer teams are helping viewers navigate through the rebuilding processes by providing them with direct help or delivering vital information through their reporting. I’m proud of our stations work and the invaluable service and information they deliver to our communities.”
In the Southwest, Telemundo Arizona’s consumer investigative team stepped in to help a woman from Mesa recover her unpaid wages from her former employer so she could pay for her medical care. While in Puerto Rico, Telemundo Puerto Rico Responde’s investigation about faulty generators grew from two dozen complaints to hundreds more being filed with DACO, Puerto Rico’s Department of Consumer Affairs, against a local business. As Puerto Rico’s Department of Justice continues to investigate the complaints, some consumers have already received new, replacement generators thanks to the station's work. On the west coast, a North Bay area viewer contacted NBC Bay Area Responds after her insurance company required her to submit an itemized inventory of every single belonging she lost in the wildfires to receive 100 percent of her insurance benefits. Within 24 hours of NBC Bay Area reporting about the consumer’s issue, the insurance company contacted the viewer and offered her a cash settlement, with no itemization required. With wildfires also rampant all along Southern California, NBC4’s consumer team aired an important story about the dangers of illegal price gouging during times of emergency and what to do if viewers spot this kind of behavior. In one case last year, the stations’ consumer investigative teams received multiple complaints from English and Spanish-speaking viewers all across the country voicing concerns about peeling “leather” on their couches, stemming from NBC 5 Chicago’s consumer investigative report which recovered more than $190,000 for consumers after discovering that the material at fault was “bonded leather,“ an imitation leather.
Charged with standing up for consumers who have been wronged, the NBC and Telemundo-owned stations consumer investigative teams are located in 18 markets including: New York (WNBC/WNJU), Los Angeles (KNBC/KVEA), Chicago (WMAQ/WSNS), Philadelphia (WCAU/WWSI), Dallas-Fort Worth (KXAS/KXTX), Washington, D.C.
