Telemundo 51 Miami Milestone Marathon Raises Nearly $4.2M for the South Florida Cancer Clinic

LIGA

September 21, 2023

On Saturday, Sept. 16, Telemundo 51 Miami (WSCV) produced its 25th Liga Contra el Cáncer Telemaraton, helping raise $4,192,175 for the South Florida nonprofit the Liga Contra el Cáncer (League Against Cancer). The historic telethon has provided funding annually that allows the clinic to provide free treatment to cancer patients who lack the financial means to pay for care themselves.

The star-studded, 4.5-hour telethon, which was held in Telemundo 51’s studios and the Miami-Dade Expo Center from 7 to 11:30 p.m.,  was hosted by Telemundo 51’s Daisy Ballmajó, host of Conectados con Daisy, and Telemundo 51 news anchors Fausto Malavé and Alejandra Molina, as well as WSCV anchors and reporters Marilys Llanos, Mariana Rodríguez, Gloria Ordaz, Lisett Mari and Alejandro Isturiz.

The 2023 telethon was dedicated to the ‘Queen of Salsa’ Celia Cruz, the late Cuban singer and one of the most popular Latin artists of the 20th century who was a longtime supporter of Liga Contra el Cáncer. Musicians Gloria and Emilio Estefan shared their memories of Cruz and her philanthropic work with the clinic. The also featured musical performances by Amaury Gutiérrez, Aymée Nuviola, the Celia Cruz All Stars, Diago, DJ Yus, Gente de Zona, Leslie Cartaya, Jon Secada, Lena, Malena Burke, Oscar D’León, Rob Suárez and Willy Chirino.

“I am always proud of the work my team does for the Liga Contra el Cáncer telethon, but this year I felt even prouder because it was the 25th consecutive year our station has produced the telethon and of our commitment to la Liga,” said Jorge Carballo, President and General Manager of Telemundo 51 and NBC6. “The fact that this telethon was dedicated to the Queen of Salsa Celia Cruz, who was a huge supporter of la Liga and who sadly died of cancer herself, made it all the more special.”
