AFI DOCS and NBCUniversal Launch Impact Lab
June 16, 2015

NBCUniversal is partnering with the American Film Institute (AFI) to support the AFI DOCS Festival from June 17-21. AFI DOCS is one of the most significant documentary film festivals in the world, bringing together artists, audiences, and political leaders to highlight documentary film and its ability to create change. The five-day festival takes place at venues in Washington, D.C. and AFI Silver Theatre and Cultural Center, the independent film center of the metropolitan region.

NBCUniversal is proud to create and sponsor the inaugural AFI DOCS Impact Lab, an innovative part of the festival that provides filmmakers with intensive training in community action, advocacy, online organizing, and technology for engagement.  This year’s Impact Lab will take place June 16 and 17.

Impact Lab participants will leave with skills to effectively engage at a grassroots level with policymakers who are addressing a range of  issues  from education to urban planning, veterans’ services and gender identity. Developing cross-sector partnerships with decision makers on Capitol Hill and community organizations offers filmmakers the opportunity to increase the impact of their own films and have more opportunities to directly affect policies.

During this year’s Lab, filmmakers will meet with the offices of Senator Cory Booker (NJ), Congressman Ted Lieu (CA), Senator Mark Warner (VA), Senator Patty Murray (WA), Senator Boxer (CA), Congressman Steve Israel (NY), Congressman Dan Kildee (MI), and Senator Al Franken (MN).
