Introducing the New 'Comcast Building'
July 01, 2015

30 Rockefeller Plaza in midtown Manhattan has officially been renamed the “Comcast Building.” Comcast NBCUniversal unveiled the new granite pier naming stones located at the entryways to 30 Rockefeller Plaza earlier today. The new Comcast NBCUniversal rooftop signage will be illuminated this evening, adding the company’s logo to the New York City skyline. The signage features the Comcast logo on the north and south facing roof exteriors and the NBC Peacock on the western facing rooftop façade.  This is the first time in history that the iconic NBC Peacock logo will appear atop the network’s historic broadcast headquarters.

Today’s date has historic significance to NBCUniversal. On July 1, 1941, 30 Rockefeller Plaza was home to the first commercial television broadcast with WNBC (then WNBT) offering a lineup that included a Brooklyn Dodgers vs. Philadelphia Phillies baseball game and Lowell Thomas reporting the news from Studio 3H.

Additional Facts:

  • Comcast Building is the third name of iconic 30 Rockefeller Plaza. RCA, the company that founded NBC, had its letters atop 30 Rock beginning in 1937. The building was renamed for GE in 1988, two years after the company re-acquired RCA. In 2013, Comcast NBCUniversal announced it had purchased from GE the properties used by NBCUniversal at 30 Rockefeller Plaza.
  • The signage utilizes custom energy-efficient LED lights that mimic the exposed neon look of previous 30 Rock rooftop signs.
  • On the north and south sides, the Comcast letters are 12 feet tall crowned by an 11 foot high NBC peacock. The western facing NBC peacock is 18 feet tall.
