Comcast NBCUniversal Teams With 4.0 Schools
April 20, 2016

Comcast NBCUniversal has teamed up with 4.0 Schools to support organizations that are reshaping our education system. 4.0 Schools is an education incubator that helps entrepreneurs launch tools, services, and schools that tackle issues like youth unemployment, code literacy, teacher training and more.

This year, NBCUniversal is proud to sponsor 10 Startup Weekend Education (SWEDU)  events on behalf of 4.0 Schools. At these action-oriented events, entrepreneurs gather to brainstorm ideas that improve and reimagine education, transforming these ideas into startups in just 54 hours.

At each Comcast NBCUniversal-sponsored startup weekend, there is an auxiliary Comcast NBCUniversal 21st Century Solution Challenge. This challenge pushes participants to build solutions that prepare students for the 21st century workforce and to lead 21st century communities. The winning team receives up to 3 tickets to the South by Southwest Education Conference in Austin, TX. Two Comcast NBCUniversal 21st Century Solution Challenge winners that stood out are San Diego SWEDU winner Be Nativ and Seattle SWEDU winner Floop.

Be Nativ, an app that allows language learners to practice pronunciation with dedicated coaches. By recording phrases and having coaches respond with feedback on the users’ accents, Be Nativ users can make it over the final hurdle of proper pronunciation to become fluent. Floop is a digital platform that allows educators to provide timely, quality feedback on written assignments. Students take a picture of their work and upload it to the app. Teachers access student work on Floop, drag and drop comments from a pre-populated bank of feedback aligned with education standards, and upload personalized written and audio comments. Students can instantly view feedback and respond, completing the loop and promoting dialogue with their teachers.

Through our work with 4.0 Schools, SWEDU and the 21st Century Solution Challenges, Comcast NBCUniversal believes that by investing in innovative education solutions, we can further the next generation of leaders and achievers.
