This week, NBCUniversal is teaming up with the Millennial Trains Project to help twenty-five innovative and civic-minded Millennials embark on a ten day journey of community building and social impact through six major American cities. The Millennial Trains Project is a movement that leads young entrepreneurs, artists, and innovators on transcontinental train journeys where they work to address societal challenges by engaging in meaningful dialogue and drawing inspiration from cities and citizens across America.
Each train participant is working to advance a project that will help serve people and communities on issues that range from using technology to promote STEM education in diverse communities to creating new networks for female empowerment. Aided by mentorship from seasoned entrepreneurs and industry experts, the Millennials will meet with local innovators, artisans, public officials and other change-makers to ignite their own creativity and push their visions to reality.
The caravan of vintage rail cars will depart from Union Station in Los Angeles, on May 22, 2015, following remarks from Mayor Aja Brown of the City of Compton. The train will then make its way through four other cities in the American South: Austin, San Antonio, New Orleans, Atlanta before arriving in Washington, D.C. To meet this year’s class and to follow the participants on their journeys, visit Millennial Trains Project.
As lead sponsor of the 2015 journey, NBCUniversal worked with the Millennial Trains Project to provide scholarship funding for select participants. In addition to scholarship funding, NBCUniversal will work to support the ongoing development of projects that are in line with the company’s commitment to pro-social initiatives.
The partnership with Millennial Trains Project is part of the NBCUniversal’ s unifying vision for social impact: Open Possibilities. Focused on uniting media, technology and community to ignite passion around social issues, unleash creativity and connect us to something bigger, Open Possibilities represents what is possible when we push the limits of what technology and media can achieve to move communities and people forward.
